A treasure map that marks unopened chests. Some of what is inside is not quite right

🗺️ What it is
Finders Keepers gives you a Treasure Map: hold it and every generated chest within 128 blocks that nobody has opened yet shows up on it as a red X. To make the walk worth it, those chests are a little fuller than vanilla, with an extra find matched to the place it came from. Some of those finds have their names spelled slightly wrong, and they work about as well as the spelling suggests. The mod never points this out to anyone. People find out.
The map half is honestly great: you hold it, red X marks bloom over shipwrecks and dungeons and the mineshaft corridor you were about to skip, and each X winks out as you loot it. Then one day a chest hands you twelve Dimonds and you are rich. You craft a sword, swing it at a zombie, swing it at a second zombie, and it snaps in a puff of blue dust. You hover over the pieces of your life and read the name properly for the first time. From then on you read every name properly, forever, and you start wondering which of the things already in your chests you never checked.
👥 Playing with friends
Install on the server alone and completely vanilla clients can join and see everything.
⚠️ Before you install
Built and server-verified, but never playtested: the map's red X marks, the item art and the totem animation have never been seen rendered by a human.
One kind of chest-loot obsidian does not stay placed. If a portal matters to you, build it from obsidian you mined yourself.
⏱️ Your first 5 minutes
New to this mod? Do these in order and you will have seen the point of it.
Put the jar on your server or single-player instance. Friends on plain vanilla Minecraft can join a modded server anyway.
Craft a Treasure Map: a filled map and four gold nuggets. Journeyman cartographers also sell them.
Hold it and walk. Every unopened generated chest within 128 blocks gets a red X, and looted ones disappear.
Follow an X to a shipwreck and take everything. Twelve Dimonds is a great haul.
Craft a sword out of them and go find a zombie. Then a second zombie.
From now on, hover over everything before you trust it.
🔁 How it works
The Treasure Map
A held map scans loaded chunks within 128 blocks every few seconds for containers whose generated loot is still sealed, and draws a red X per chest. The X clears the moment the chest is looted, and chests players placed themselves never appear. It only reads chunks that are already loaded, so it never generates terrain to look ahead.
Tip: Maps turn up in shipwreck map rooms, cartographer chests and buried treasure at about one in four.
The extra finds
Generated chests roll a 15% chance of one extra item matched to the structure: something shiny in a shipwreck, something sturdy in a bastion, something that belongs in an end city. Chests currently marked on somebody's Treasure Map roll 25%, and fishing treasure rolls 5%. All three rates are config values.
Tip: The map makes you open more chests. That is not a coincidence.
The house rule
Every unusual find follows one rule: the name carries exactly one plausible typo, durability is about a tenth of the real thing, combat and armor numbers are halved, and food feeds half as much with a side of nausea. The name renders in plain white, not italic, exactly like a vanilla item name. The misspelling on hover and the stats in use are the only tells there are.
Tip: Hover before you craft. The name is always the tell.
Crafting carries over
Craft, smelt or smith with an unusual ingredient and the result is the unusual version of whatever you were making. Dimonds plus sticks make a Dimond Sword. This is also how a haul of Dimonds quietly works its way through an entire storage room.
Recipes you earn
Once you have held one of these finds, its recipes unlock: cheap, plausible crafts like four lapis and a glass pane. From that point you can manufacture them on purpose, which is where multiplayer servers stop being about survival.
Tip: A Totem of Undyeing costs one emerald and four gold nuggets. A thoughtful gift.
Quiet by design
The mod registers no items, no blocks, no entities and no network packets. Everything is vanilla items carrying 1.21 data components, which is why unmodified clients can join a modded server and see all of it. There are no chat messages, no sounds and no tooltips, ever. Installing the jar on the client too adds only artwork, and gradlew exportPack builds that artwork as a plain resource pack instead.
🎒 Items & blocks
🗺️
Treasure Map
A filled map that marks every unopened generated chest within 128 blocks with a red X. The genuinely useful half of the mod, and the reason people install it.
Where: Craft a filled map with four gold nuggets, buy from a journeyman cartographer, or find one in shipwreck map rooms, cartographer chests and buried treasure.
Dimond
Worthless as a gem, dangerous as an ingredient: everything crafted from it comes out matching. Villagers will not take it.
Where: Shipwrecks, buried treasure, desert and jungle temples. Or four lapis and a glass pane, once you know how.
Dimond Sword
Attack 4, durability 7. Breaks in a puff of blue dye particles, usually on the second zombie.
Where: Dungeon and mineshaft chests, or crafted from a Dimond and a stick.
Dimond Pickaxe
Looks diamond, digs wood-tier, at wood speed, for 7 blocks of durability.
Where: Dungeon and mineshaft chests, or crafting with a Dimond.
Dimond Armor
A full set: helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots. One armor point each, durability 12.
Where: End city chests, mostly.
Nethrite Sword
Stone-tier numbers wearing the most expensive skin in the game. Durability 15.
Where: Bastion chests.
Enchanted Golden Appel
Glints like the real thing. Feeds you two points, gives ten seconds of nausea, grants no absorption whatsoever.
Where: Bastions and ruined portals.
Totem of Undyeing
On fatal damage it pops the full totem animation, and then you die anyway. Your dropped leather armor comes out of it with the dye removed. It un-dyes.
Where: Ancient cities, or an emerald and four gold nuggets.
Elyptra
Glides beautifully for two seconds, then folds. Six durability in total, and at zero it renames itself to Elyptra (torn).
Where: End cities and ancient cities, or two phantom membranes and a sheet of paper.
Ender Perl
Teleports you three blocks forward. One throw in four goes straight backward instead. Full fall damage either way.
Where: Stronghold chests, or an egg and purple dye.
Obsidan
Places real obsidian that crumbles to gravel sixty seconds later. The timer survives server restarts. Nether portals built from it do not.
Where: Ruined portal chests, or eight black concrete powder and a water bucket.
Emrald
A gem no villager will accept, which is how most people find out.
Where: Shipwrecks and buried treasure.
Bident
A thrown trident that loyally returns to the nearest other player within 32 blocks. On a solo server it just lies there.
Where: Structure loot, once the ocean-adjacent tables roll it.
Bo
A bow that fires at 60% speed with a random drift to the left.
Where: Structure loot.
Sadle
Works perfectly for thirty seconds, after which the mount bucks you off and the Sadle falls in the dirt.
Where: Dungeon and mineshaft chests.
Nam Tag
Names a mob like the real thing. The mob forgets the name after two minutes.
Where: Structure loot.
Mendig
An enchanted book that reads Mending, glints like Mending, and contains nothing at all.
Where: Structure loot, priced at whatever your friend will trade for Mending.
Golden Carot
One point of nutrition and a stomach ache.
Where: Structure loot.
📜 Lore
Flavour, not rules. None of this changes how the mod behaves.
The supplier
Somebody stocks these chests. Somebody with access to lapis at scale, a loose relationship with quality control, and a distribution network that reaches every shipwreck, bastion and ancient city in the world. The villagers know something: they refuse the Dimonds and the Emralds on sight, no appraisal needed. They have clearly been burned before.
Genuine Article™
The config option revealLore stamps one line of lore on every unusual find: Genuine Article™. It ships turned off. It exists for the day the server finally holds the trial.
🎁 Jokes & trivia
Bits you might miss
The Totem of Undyeing plays the entire triumphant totem animation before letting you die, then removes the dye from your leather armor. It is a totem of un-dyeing.
The Ender Perl sends you three blocks forward, except for the one throw in four that is straight backward, and it charges full fall damage either way.
A thrown Bident returns faithfully to the nearest other player. Whoever that is.
The Sadle gives you thirty honest seconds of riding before the horse expresses an opinion.
Obsidan builds a perfectly functional nether portal that has sixty seconds to live.
Mendig is the item form of a rumor: the name, the glint, and nothing inside.
At zero durability the Elyptra updates its own name to Elyptra (torn), the only honesty in the entire catalog.
Craft with one Dimond and the result inherits everything. The storage room infection is self-sustaining.
From the workshop
The misspelling engine is unit-tested against all 1,448 vanilla item names: every output has to differ from the original, stay readable, and come out identical on every run.
The item art is the vanilla textures with a 6 to 10 degree hue shift and exactly one interior pixel recolored. Nobody has ever seen it rendered in a game.
The mod registers literally nothing: no items, blocks, entities or packets. That is the whole reason unmodified vanilla clients can join a server running it.
An automated release audit fails the build if any of a list of forbidden words describing the finds appears anywhere in the jar, the resources or the README.
In headless testing the chest roll measured 15.9% against a configured 15%, and an Obsidan block crumbled on schedule across a server restart.
❓ FAQ
Do my friends need to install anything?
No. On a server, the mod alone is enough; completely vanilla clients join normally and see everything, item names included. Installing it on the client too only adds nicer item art.
Can this mess with items I already own?
No. It never touches existing items. It only adds new things to generated loot chests, fishing, and recipes you unlock by handling one.
How do I tell a find from the real thing?
Read the name. Every unusual find carries exactly one typo, always visible on hover, never italic. There is no other warning, on purpose.
Can I have the map without the surprises?
Yes. Set finds.chestChance, finds.mappedChestChance and finds.fishingChance to 0 in config/finderskeepers-common.toml and the Treasure Map is all that is left.
Why is my nether portal suddenly gravel?
Ask where the obsidian came from. Mined obsidian is safe forever; obsidian from a chest deserves a closer look before you build with it.
Does the map lag the server?
It only scans chunks that are already loaded, on a timer, and never generates terrain. Headless testing showed no measurable cost.
