No experience assumed. By the end of this page you will know what a mod is, what a "loader" is, and which of these 35 mods to try first.

🧱 What is a mod?

Minecraft, out of the box, has a fixed set of rules. A mod is an extra file that changes or adds to those rules: new blocks, new creatures, new behaviour. Mods are made by players, not by Mojang, and they are usually free.

A mod is not a cheat or a hack. It is closer to a plug-in for a web browser: an ordinary file you put in an ordinary folder, which the game loads when it starts.

⚙️ What is a mod loader?

Vanilla Minecraft will not read mod files on its own. You first install a small program called a mod loader, which adds a new profile to your Minecraft launcher. Launch that profile and the loader reads everything in your mods folder.

There are three common ones, and every mod is built for a specific one:

LoaderWhat to know
NeoForgeThe current mainstream loader for modern versions. Most mods on this site use it.
ForgeThe old giant. Still common on older versions like 1.20.1.
FabricLighter and quicker to update. Usually needs a helper mod called Fabric API installed alongside it.

⚠️ The single most common mistake

A Forge mod will not run on Fabric, and a 1.20.1 mod will not run on 1.21.1. The loader and the version must both match. Every mod page here lists both at the top.

📱 Java or Bedrock?

There are two different Minecrafts. Java Edition runs on PC and takes mods, which is what most of this site is about. Bedrock Edition runs on phones, tablets, consoles and the Windows Store version; it does not take mods, it takes add-ons, which install completely differently. A few of these projects have Bedrock versions and are labelled as such.

🎯 Which one should I try first?

Start with something finished and self-contained:

💡 Read the status badge

Every mod here carries an honest label. Released means it has been out in the world. Built means it compiles and the author tested it, but it has never had a real playtest. Fun, but expect rough edges. Design and Parked mean there is nothing to download at all.
