What it is

Graveyard Shift is a plugin for Minecraft servers, so it installs on the server and everyone joins with a normal, unmodified game. It keeps a ledger of how many hours each player has spent playing while nobody else was on. Stay under the limit and nothing happens. Go past it and the world slowly stops paying: ore and mob drops shrink toward 10 percent, then you lose the ability to place blocks, and eventually you are kicked and sent home for twelve hours. Playing alongside a friend pays the debt down at double speed.

It is 4am and you are strip-mining alone, which is exactly the session this plugin was written about. First a quiet warning that the world is losing interest. Then the diamonds start coming up short, and an action bar readout keeps you honest about how short: yields 40 percent, solo 5.2 hours. Push on and your hands start shaking, and nothing you place will stick. Push past that and the server ends the shift for you, with a note suggesting you come back with someone. The whole time there is one clean exit that costs nothing: get a friend online, and every stage rolls back.

👥 Playing with friends

Made for SMPs: an hour played alongside someone pays off two hours of solo debt

⚠️ Before you install

  • Every penalty stage is unplaytested with a real player. Boot, config, persistence and commands are verified on a live server; the experience of being diminished, locked down or banned is not.
  • Setting recovery.idle-multiplier to 0 makes debt permanent until paid with company, so anyone whose friends are rarely online will eventually climb the whole ladder no matter how they play.
  • The experience-orbs catch-all is off by default for a reason: turned on alongside the mob and block experience options, the same XP gets scaled twice.

Your first 5 minutes

New to this mod? Do these in order and you will have seen the point of it.

  1. Drop GraveyardShift-0.1.0.jar into your Paper server's plugins folder and restart. Players install nothing.
  2. Run /gs status. It shows your debt in hours, your stage, your current yield and how much company would clear it.
  3. Play with a friend online and watch the ledger fall at double speed. Nothing ever fires.
  4. Or play alone: half an hour before your free budget runs out, a warning arrives in chat.
  5. As an admin, open config.yml and find thresholds.solo-hours. It is the headline knob; everything else hangs off it.

How it works

The ledger

Every player carries a debt measured in hours. It grows at 1x while you play and nobody counts as company, is paid down at 2x while you play alongside someone, and is slowly forgiven while you are AFK or logged off, about 1.2 hours per real day, so a holiday does not leave you permanently handicapped. It is capped at 24 hours, and every penalty is a pure function of the number, so every stage is reversible.

Tip: One evening together clears two evenings alone. That ratio is the whole design.

The ladder

With default settings: under 3 hours of debt, nothing. A warning arrives half an hour before the budget runs out. From 3 to 6 hours, yields decay smoothly from 100 percent down to a 10 percent floor. At 7 hours, lockdown. At 9 hours, a 12-hour temp ban, after which the ledger is wiped clean. A player who solos three hours every evening hits diminishing returns the first night, lockdown around the fourth, and the ban around the fifth; the same hours with a friend online trigger nothing at all.

What counts as alone

Configurable, three ways. SERVER, the default, means you are solo whenever fewer than two players are online at all, which is the rule that stops the 4am session. WORLD means nobody else in your world; RADIUS means nobody within a set distance, for groups who share a server but not a neighbourhood. An AFK player is not company (five minutes without input, on the same idle clock vanilla uses), and neither is anyone in spectator or hidden by a vanish plugin.

Tip: Parking an alt account at spawn buys you nothing. It goes AFK and stops counting.

Diminishing returns

The decay applies to ore drops from a configurable list of valuable blocks, mob drops, mining and mob experience, fishing, freshly opened container loot and villager trades. Nothing is ever deleted from an inventory and nothing is rolled back: diminished yields simply never spawn. A diminished player can still dig, fight, travel and build; they just stop getting rich while nobody is looking.

Lockdown

At 7 hours of debt your hands stop working for construction: no placing blocks, no emptying buckets, no placing boats, minecarts or paintings. Breaking blocks stays allowed by default, deliberately, so nobody gets entombed in their own base. You can still mine, fight, travel and log off.

The ban settles the account

At 9 hours you are kicked and temp-banned for 12 hours, long enough that the solo session is genuinely over, short enough to be back tomorrow evening. By default the ledger resets to zero when the ban lands: you served the time, so the account is settled. Admins can raise reset-debt-to-hours to make the ban a warning shot instead, or disable it entirely.

Who is left alone

Anyone with the bypass permission, anyone in creative or spectator, anyone in a world on the exempt list, and anyone with under 5 hours of total playtime on the server, so nobody's first evening is spent under a penalty they do not understand yet. Admins get /gs status, top, set, add, clear, pardon, reload and save; /gs pardon lifts the ban and clears the ledger in one move.

Lore

Flavour, not rules. None of this changes how the mod behaves.

The night audit

The server has always known who was on and when. This is merely the first time it has decided to do something about it. Hours played in company are ordinary hours. Hours played alone are logged under a separate column, and that column accrues interest, and the world's willingness to hand over diamonds turns out to be exactly as deep as its confidence that someone would have seen you find them.

Sent home

The kick screen is not angry. It totals your solo hours like a timesheet, tells you when you can come back, and suggests, in the tone of a manager who has seen this before, that you bring someone next time.

Jokes & trivia

Bits you might miss

  • A debt-ridden player opening a trade gets: "The villager looks at you, then at the empty room, and changes their mind."
  • Lockdown announces itself with "Your hands are shaking. You can't build anything more until someone else is on."
  • The ban screen signs off with "Come back in 12 hours, ideally with someone else."
  • Yields floor at 10 percent rather than zero, because a server that drops literally nothing reads as broken rather than haunted.
  • The warning stage says the world is "losing interest" in you, which is somehow worse than any number would have been.
  • An admin with the bypass permission still counts as company for you by default, because an admin actually playing alongside you is, in fact, company.

From the workshop

  • It was built for a friend-group SMP where one person quietly logging in at 4am to strip-mine put the whole server's economy out of joint.
  • 38 unit tests pin the accrual and decay math, and the plugin was verified on a live headless Paper server: clean enable, block tags resolving, the ledger surviving a restart, and every command including the ban path.
  • Nothing that needs a real player has been exercised yet: no human has ever actually been diminished, locked down or banned by it.
  • The shipped config documents three whole postures by name: a gentle preset with the ban turned off, the default, and a strict one with a 24-hour ban and zero idle forgiveness.
  • At the default idle forgiveness, a moderate soloist hovers on the ladder forever and never reaches the ban. Set it to zero and debt becomes permanent until paid off with company, which the config itself warns is a very different plugin.

FAQ

Do players need to install anything?

No. It is a Paper server plugin: it sits in the server's plugins folder and completely vanilla clients join normally.

Does it delete my stuff when yields drop?

Never. Diminished drops simply never appear, and lockdown blocks the action before it happens. There is no confiscation and no rollback of anything you already own.

What if I just genuinely like playing alone?

Then this plugin is a tax on your lifestyle by design, but it is tunable: the gentle preset disables the ban and makes it a mild economic nudge, admins can hand out the bypass permission, and idle forgiveness means moderate solo play hovers below the worst stages forever.

Can I cheat it with an alt account?

Not easily. An AFK player is not company, on the same idle clock vanilla uses for its idle kick, so the alt would have to actually play. Spectators and vanished players do not count either.

How does someone get un-banned early?

An admin runs /gs pardon, which lifts the temp ban and clears the ledger in one step. The ban also expires on its own, 12 hours by default, and by default settles the debt to zero.
