🥅 What it is
Networth adds a throwable fishing net. Wind it up, sling it out on a rope, and it sweeps through the water catching every fish it touches. Vanilla fishing pulls items out of empty water by magic; the net only takes fish that are actually swimming there. Right-click again and it hauls itself home with the catch.
You stand up in your boat over a school of cod, wind up, and let the net fly. It hits the water, spreads open into a dome, and ploughs a slow corridor through the school while you watch bubbles burst on the surface with every fish it takes. When you haul it back it comes home as a heavy bag with real cod visibly tangled in the mesh, and three quarters of the way in it opens and the whole catch comes flying at your face. One cast does the work of a hundred sword pokes, and you saw every second of it happen.
👥 Playing with friends
Fine on servers with the mod on both sides; catches roll loot with the thrower as the catcher
⏱️ Your first 5 minutes
New to this mod? Do these in order and you will have seen the point of it.
Craft a Fishing Net: five string over three iron nuggets.
Find water with visible fish in it. An ocean works, so does a river.
Hold right-click to wind up, release to sling. Aim ahead of the school, not at it.
Watch the surface: every catch sends a burst of bubbles straight up above the net.
Right-click again to haul. Three quarters of the way back the net opens and the catch flies at you.
Fill all nine squares in one cast to earn the Networth advancement.
🔁 How it works
The cast
Hold right-click to wind up, bow-style, and release to throw. The net leaves your hand on a visible rope, carries your throw into the water, then keeps going the way you cast it: spreading open, sinking slowly, sweeping a corridor through everything in front of it. Anything it passes through is caught on contact. Underwater the mesh curves into a dome, middle riding high and corners hanging low, and the instant it catches something it snaps shut into a bag.
Tip: Lead the school like a moving target. The net keeps your throw's direction after it hits the water.
What it catches
Cod, salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish, squid and glow squid. Each catch drops exactly what killing that fish would have dropped, rolled from its own loot table with you as the catcher; the net never invents loot. Dolphins, axolotls, turtles, guardians and tadpoles swim right through. Mod-added fish that extend the vanilla fish classes are catchable too.
Tip: No treasure, ever. Enchanted books and nautilus shells still belong to the fishing rod.
Reading the water
A net can end up twenty blocks down where you cannot see a thing. So every catch sends a burst of bubbles breaking the surface directly above the net. From a boat, that rising column is how you know the cast is working.
The haul
Right-click to bring it home. An empty net returns mouth-first, streaming long and narrow, still fishing the whole way back. A loaded one returns as a heavy bag with the fish visibly tangled inside. Three quarters of the way back the net opens and the catch comes flying at you. A net holds nine fish, one per square of its 3x3 mesh, and each haul costs one point of its 64 durability.
Leave it out as a trap
A net that runs out of momentum settles on the bottom and keeps working; fish that wander into it are caught the same way. Walk more than 48 blocks away and the line snaps, but the net stays put with everything it caught, and a sneak-click gets it all back. However a cast ends, the net and its catch return to your inventory, never to the seabed.
Tip: Cast over a busy reef, go mine for a while, come back and sneak-click. The net was on the clock.
Enchantments
Wide Net I to III adds one block of catch width per level, so a 3x3 net becomes up to 6x6, and the mesh, tail and bag all render at that real size. Bottomless I to III adds four fish of capacity per level, taking nine up to twenty-one. Unbreaking and Mending work as usual. Lure and Luck of the Sea deliberately do not apply: there is no bite timer to shorten and no loot table to bias.
Tip: Everything is tunable in config/networth-common.toml, from sweep distance to whether squid count.
🎒 Items & blocks
Fishing Net
The whole mod in one item: a throwable cast net that catches fish on contact. 64 durability, one point per haul, and it always comes back to your inventory.
Where: Five string over three iron nuggets. The nuggets are the rim weights that make it sink.
Net Line
The rope end you hold while your net is out in the water. Its tooltip says the only thing you need to know: "Right-click to haul the net in".
Where: Takes the net's place in your hand for as long as the net is deployed.
📜 Lore
Flavour, not rules. None of this changes how the mod behaves.
Honest work
The fishing rod is a mystic. It dangles a hook in visibly empty water and pulls out enchanted books, name tags, entire saddles. The net does not deal in miracles. It takes what is actually swimming there, fish by fish, and not one thing more. Two tools, two jobs: the rod for wishes, the net for dinner.
🎁 Jokes & trivia
Bits you might miss
Lure and Luck of the Sea are banned from the net on purpose. With no bite timer and no loot table, they would just sit in the tooltip doing nothing, and the tooltip deserves better.
Tadpoles are officially too small to bother with.
The advancement for filling all nine squares in one cast is called Networth. Your net worth: nine fish.
The only chat message in the entire mod is "The net line snaps!"
A caught squid rides home visibly squeezing itself out through one of the mesh squares. It does not make it.
Dolphins swim straight through the net, which is either a physics decision or a public relations one.
From the workshop
Nine separate builds: NeoForge, Forge and Fabric, each on 1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 26.1, all dedicated-server-verified before release.
Wide Net is enforced visually. The mesh, the streaming tail and the closed bag all render at the enchanted size, so a Wide Net III net is simply bigger in the water.
The unit tests cover exactly two things the eye cannot check: net capacity and the mid-haul release point.
❓ FAQ
Do I still need a fishing rod?
For treasure, yes. Enchanted books, name tags and nautilus shells only ever come from the rod. The net is a food-and-volume tool, and that split is deliberate.
Can I lose my net?
No. However a cast ends, the net and everything it caught go into your inventory. If you walk out of the 48-block line range, the net waits where it settled and a sneak-click recovers it, catch and all.
Does it catch modded fish?
If they extend the vanilla fish classes, yes, automatically.
