What it is

Endling is a server plugin, not a mod: it installs on a Paper server and everyone joins with a completely vanilla game. Every animal species gets a finite wild population that only goes down. Kill enough wild pigs and eventually there is a last wild pig, wearing a name in gold over its head. Kill that one and pigs are extinct in the wild, forever.

At first nothing changes; you hunt cows for leather like always. Then one evening the chat says wild pigs are endangered, and you try to remember the last time you actually saw one. The wild gets quieter in exact proportion to how you have treated it. And the day you meet a sheep called Willow with a gold name floating over her head, you find yourself building a fence around a wild animal you were about to shear, because you have done the maths on what her name means.

👥 Playing with friends

One shared wild population for the whole server; a neighbour's chicken farm is everyone's problem

⚠️ Before you install

  • This is a server plugin: it goes in the server's plugins folder, not in a mods folder.
  • Extinction is permanent by design. If your server wants a safety net, that net is an op with /endling set.

Your first 5 minutes

New to this mod? Do these in order and you will have seen the point of it.

  1. Drop the Endling jar into your Paper server's plugins folder and restart. Players install nothing.
  2. Craft a Naturalist's Journal: a book and an emerald, anywhere in the grid.
  3. Right-click a cow with it and read the census line that appears over your hotbar.
  4. Sneak-use it in the air for the full species list, rarest first.
  5. Go about your day. The counts are moving, and mostly in one direction.

How it works

Wild or domestic

Every mob is origin-tagged the moment it spawns. Natural spawns and worldgen are wild, and so is anything that predates the plugin. Anything a player caused is domestic: breeding, thrown eggs, spawn eggs, spawners, curing, allay duplication, commands. The only way for an animal to be domestic is to be born of a player.

Every wild death counts

When a wild mob dies, its species' count drops by one, whatever the cause: player, fox, lava, cliff, cactus. Domestic deaths never touch the count, and nothing raises it except slow natural regeneration. A drop-crusher farm is not a loophole; it is the fastest extinction machine on the server, with your name on it.

Tip: Farm domestic animals. Breed two wild cows and the calves are yours; the parents still count as wild.

The wild thins out

As a population falls, natural spawning of that species thins in proportion. Below the critical line, 10% of the starting population, it stops entirely: fresh chunks generate without them, and the world simply runs out.

Regeneration and the endling rule

Populations heal slowly on their own, one point per species every 45 real minutes by default, but only while at least one wild member survives. Zero is terminal: regeneration never resurrects a species, and one survivor is enough for it to claw all the way back. That is the endling rule, and it makes the last individual of a species the most important animal on the server.

Relict names

When a species is down to its last few, five by default, the survivors get names in gold over their heads: Willow, Clover, Maple, Juniper, Sage, Rowan. The names are applied retroactively to wild-origin mobs and removed again if the population recovers. Killing Meadow is supposed to feel different, and it does.

Tip: A gold name is the plugin telling you, personally, to put the sword away.

The broadcasts

The server announces the milestones: endangered at 25%, critically endangered at 10% when spawning stops, and recovery on the way back up. Extinction gets the full treatment: a chat line naming exactly who or what killed the last one, a full-screen EXTINCT title for everyone online, and a small melodramatic dirge.

The Naturalist's Journal

Crafted shapeless from a book and an emerald. Right-click a creature to see its species' census over your hotbar; use it in the air for a summary of everything extinct, critical and endangered; sneak-use in the air for the full list, rarest first. Point it at something untracked, like a zombie, and it answers that the wild population is beyond counting.

Transformations

A wild mob that transforms away counts as a wild loss: a pig struck by lightning, a mooshroom sheared into a cow, a villager zombified. Whatever it becomes is domestic, so one animal can never cost two species.

Items & blocks

Naturalist's Journal

The census tool: aim it at a creature for that species' numbers, use it in the air for the server-wide report, sneak-use for the full list, rarest first.

Where: A book and an emerald, shapeless, in any crafting grid.

Lore

Flavour, not rules. None of this changes how the mod behaves.

What an endling is

An endling is the real word for the last known individual of a species. When it dies, the species dies with it; there is no smaller number to fall to. The plugin names the candidates in gold ahead of time, so that when the moment comes, everyone on the server knows exactly what was done, to whom, and by whom.

The commons

There is one population pool per server, shared by everyone, on purpose. Your restraint can be undone by someone else's chicken farm, and their restraint by your leather run. The wild does not keep separate accounts, so the players have to start keeping them for each other.

Jokes & trivia

Bits you might miss

  • The extinction broadcast names the killer with full attribution, whoever it was: a player, a fox, or lava.
  • From the readme, on breeding: "breeding gives you animals, not absolution."
  • Extinction comes with a small melodramatic dirge, played for the entire server.
  • Point the Journal at a zombie and it reports that the wild population is beyond counting.
  • The Sniffer ships already at zero. It hatches from ancient eggs; it never had a wild population to lose.
  • Rod fishing pulls up items, not entities, so all 1,500 wild cod are perfectly safe from every fishing rod on the server.
  • Villagers are tracked too, 128 of them. The plugin declines to define what a wild villager is; it just counts them.

From the workshop

  • Playtest round 1 found that right-clicking a mob with the Journal silently did nothing; v0.2.0 answers with three separate event nets, including a raytrace fallback that reads whatever creature you are aiming at.
  • The original extinction title did not fit on screen. It is now just EXTINCT, with the details demoted to the subtitle.
  • The shipped population table is tuned so that wild-hunting the leather for a full enchanting setup, roughly 45 to 90 cows, drags you through the endangerment warnings on the way.
  • The three Paper lines are regular branches of one codebase, unlike the mods' orphan branches, because the code is 95% shared.

FAQ

Do players need to install anything?

No. Endling is a Paper server plugin; vanilla clients join normally and see everything, including the gold names and the broadcasts.

Can breeding bring a species back?

No. Bred animals are domestic and never rejoin the wild count. Only slow regeneration heals a population, and only while at least one wild member is still alive.

What actually happens at zero?

The species is extinct in the wild, permanently. Captive herds survive just fine; they are simply not wild, and the wild never gets them back. An admin can override a count with /endling set, but the plugin itself never will.

Does my mob farm affect this?

If it kills wild-origin mobs, yes, every single death, regardless of whether a player dealt the blow. Farms built on bred, domestic animals are untouched.

  2. Drop the mod's .jar file into your mods folder.
  3. The server only (players join normally).
  4. Launch the game with that loader's profile selected.

📦 Where is the file?

This wiki documents the mods; it does not host them. Builds live in the project's own repository under mc-endling/build/libs/.
