📢 What it is
Bullet Says drops a banner across your screen every 45 seconds with an order on it and a countdown: stand on a wooden block, hold a sword, jump three times. Complete it in time and you get a short buff. Miss it and you lose health. The catch is the name at the front of the banner, because sometimes it is not Bullet, it is Bucket, and Bucket has no authority here. Obey an impostor and you take three hearts on the spot; ignore it until the timer runs out and you pass.
You are halfway through a nether trip when the banner drops and you have fourteen seconds, so you learn to move fast, and moving fast is exactly the habit the mod is built to punish. The tenth banner says Buffet Says: Take off your armor, in the same font, with the same countdown, and your hands are already on the armor slots before your eyes get back to the first word. Then Bullet tells you to stop moving, and you discover the space bar is muscle memory. Playing it well means reading everything twice while a timer eats your margin, and the pass jingle starts to feel earned.
👥 Playing with friends
Install on server and clients; every player gets their own orders, timers and penalties
⚠️ Before you install
- The three 1.20.1 jars are the least exercised of the nine: built and unit-tested, but never watched booting on a live 1.20.1 server before release.
- Orders can arrive at genuinely bad moments (lava bridges, boss fights). /bs pause exists; use it before the fight, not during.
⏱️ Your first 5 minutes
New to this mod? Do these in order and you will have seen the point of it.
- Install the jar for your loader and Minecraft version, on both server and client if you play online.
- Load a world and run /bs start. Nothing happens until you do, and it needs no operator rights.
- Obey the first banner. It is probably real.
- Keep playing until a banner says Bucket Says: Hold a sword. Do absolutely nothing for eight seconds.
- Collect your Regeneration, Speed or Haste buff for correctly ignoring a bucket.
- When the group stops falling for it, raise the stakes: /bs trapchance 0.5.
🔁 How it works
Real orders
Every 45 seconds (configurable, 10 to 300) an order arrives with a ticking countdown of 6 to 22 seconds. Complete it in time and you pass; fail and you lose between 1 and 5 hearts, scaled to how hard the order was. The easy reflex ones are cheap and fast; the ones that make you go and find something give you longer and hurt more.
Tip: The penalty tag on the right of the banner shows what missing this one will cost before you commit to it.
Impostors
Some banners are not from Bullet. The layout, countdown and penalty tag are pixel-identical; the only difference is the name, swapped for a near-miss: Bucket, Buffet, Butter, Button, Bulletin, Bullseye or Bulldog. Obey one and you take 3 hearts immediately, plus the buzzer. Ignore it until the timer expires and you pass, buff included. There is no warning label, no colour change and no different sound.
Tip: Read the first word, not the order. The order is the bait.
Restraint orders
Ten orders invert the reflex: Bullet tells you not to do something. Do NOT jump. STOP MOVING. Perform the forbidden action inside the window and you take 3 hearts on the spot; hold still for the full duration and you pass. These arrive from the real Bullet, which is somehow worse.
The world picks the order
Orders are not pulled from a flat list. Before each one, the mod inspects the blocks around you, the mobs near you, your inventory and your dimension, then rolls something you could actually do right now. Stand in the End and you may be told to break end stone; carry no bucket and you will never be told to hold one. There are 206 commands in total, 98 real orders, a fake twin of every one, and 10 restraint traps, across 108 distinct tasks.
Rewards
Passing anything, a completed order, an ignored impostor, an unbroken restraint, grants a random 10-second buff: Regeneration, Speed or Haste. It can be switched off with /bs rewards false if you want the challenge pure.
Sound and silence
Two audio cues exist, one for passing and one for failing, and that is all. There is deliberately no sound when an order arrives: the banner is the only announcement. The mod also speaks two languages fully, English as Bullet Says and Turkish as Bullet Derki, each with its own impostor cast.
Tuning and directing
/bulletsays (also /bs and /bullet) controls everything at runtime: interval, trap chance (default 0.20), a difficulty multiplier from 0.1x to 5x on all damage, rewards on or off, and clear to cancel the active order without penalty. The start, pause, stop and status subcommands need no operator rights, so a singleplayer world with cheats off can still run it. /bs trigger forces a specific order immediately.
Tip: Recording a video? /bs trigger lets you set up the shot instead of waiting for the roll.
📜 Lore
Flavour, not rules. None of this changes how the mod behaves.
Who is Bullet
Nobody has met Bullet. There is no mob, no voice, no face, only a banner with a name, an order and a deadline, arriving on a schedule that does not care what you were doing. Compliance is rewarded in ten-second increments. Non-compliance is billed in hearts. It is best understood as management.
The pretenders
Bucket, Buffet, Butter, Button, Bulletin, Bullseye and Bulldog have no authority whatsoever. Their banners carry the same font, the same countdown, the same penalty tag. The only thing they lack is the right to be obeyed, and they are counting on you not to check.
🎁 Jokes & trivia
Bits you might miss
- The Turkish impostor cast includes Börek Derki, which means that somewhere in the localization files a pastry is issuing survival orders.
- Bulldog Says: Open your inventory. Ignoring a dog for eight seconds has never paid better.
- There is deliberately no sound when an order arrives, so if you were in your inventory when Bucket spoke, that is on you.
- Every one of the 98 real orders has a fake twin, which makes the mod precisely half lies by volume.
- STOP MOVING is a legal order, and the space bar becomes the most expensive key on your keyboard.
- Bünyamin Derki wants you to craft a crafting table. Bünyamin can want things all he likes.
From the workshop
- 206 registered commands break down as 98 real orders, a deceptive twin of every single one, and 10 restraint traps, over 108 distinct task types.
- The impostors are localized, not translated: Bucket is not funny in Turkish, so the Turkish cast is Bulut, Bülent, Balık, Bünyamin, Burak, Börek and Biber, near-miss names that actually sound like names.
- An earlier build passed all 17 unit tests on every tree and never actually loaded on any Forge-family loader: the descriptor file had the wrong name, the dependency syntax was NeoForge's, and the entrypoint used the wrong constructor. Everything was fixed and re-verified before release.
- The success and failure cues are original recordings played at shifted pitches: success at 1.2x or 1.4x, failure at 0.9x or 0.8x. Older alarm and buzzer cues that fired when an order arrived were deliberately retired.
- The release is nine jars at once: three Minecraft versions times three mod loaders, all published on the same day.
❓ FAQ
Where do I download it?
From CurseForge: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/bullet-says. Pick the file matching your Minecraft version (1.21.1, 1.20.1 or 26.1) and loader (NeoForge, Forge or Fabric).
I installed it and nothing is happening.
That is correct behaviour. The mod does nothing until someone runs /bs start, and it can be paused any time with /bs pause. Neither needs operator rights.
How do I tell a real order from a fake one?
Read the name. That is the entire tell. The banner, countdown, sound (none) and penalty tag are identical; only Bullet has authority, and Bucket, Buffet, Butter and friends do not.
Do I need it on the server, the client, or both?
Both. The logic runs server-side and the HUD banner renders client-side. In singleplayer, installing it normally covers both. On a server, every player runs their own separate orders.
Can I make it gentler or meaner?
Yes, live: /bs interval for how often orders come, /bs trapchance for how many are traps, /bs difficulty to scale all damage from 0.1x to 5x, and /bs rewards to toggle the buffs.
